The House the Community Built

by Continental BP
The House the Community Built

On July 16, 2010, Continental Building Products (formerly Lafarge Gypsum) was proudly represented at the open house and ribbon cutting for the newly renovated "House the Community Built" in Covington, Ky. Continental's gypsum plant in Silver Grove, Ky. had the honor of providing all of the wallboard used in the project.

While Continental supplied the walls, labor for the renovation was provided courtesy of the Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission (NKCAC), through its Youthbuild program. The youth and community development program addresses core issues facing area low-income communities, including housing, education, employment, crime prevention, and leadership development. The program fosters NKCAC's mission of helping low-income individuals and families develop the knowledge, opportunities, and resources they need to achieve self-reliance.

In Youthbuild activities, low-income youths ages 18 to 24 work toward their GED and learn job skills, all while serving their communities by building affordable housing for homeless and low-income people. By doing so, participants transform not only the lives of others who are less fortunate, but transform their own lives and roles in society, as well.
